The Rijk Zwaan Connection to United Way Truffles
This is a very interesting connection and story about the two Canadian Dutch Boys and how they ended up making Tomato Truffles to be tasted in the Netherlands!
The story first began when the Rijk Zwaan Leamington – ‘Specialist for Tomato and Tomato Rootstock’ Marleen van der Torre, M.Sc. came to Dutch Boys Chocolate store to purchase Truffles, the conversation led to developing a Tomato Truffle and our search for the ‘sweetest’ tomato grown in the region. Marleen suggested we visit the Rijk Zwaan Greenhouse operation in Leamington. They of course took Marleen up on her offer, and during the visit Cor Boon and Henry Noestheden of Dutch Boys Chocolate taste-tested some of the 30 different varieties of Tomatoes. The sweetest tomato was selected and the subsequent Tomato Truffles were distributed at a Fund-raising hosted by the United Way and held at the Pelee Island Winery this year!
The event named, “Battle of the Growers” raised over $43,000 for the United Way. Every guest at the event was offered a flute of Pelee Island Winery’s finest Sparkling and two truffles from Dutch Boys Chocolate – – -of course featuring a TomatoTruffle.
The Crop Specialist Marleen Van Der Torre, on a regular visit back to Corporate Rijk Zwaan Headquarters, brought Tomato Truffles with her and the photograph shows the interested Staff participating in the tasting.
We are grateful for this fun truffle journey and connections.
You never know where chocolate will take you!
